Manzanita Burl Wood (Arctostaphylos manzanita) grows from Southern California up to Washington State. It is a smaller shrub growing up to 20 feet with twisting branches. The wood is a deep red color with yellow tones. Since the burls usually grow on the roots the wood, it often has interesting imbedded stones and voids.
Peter Cimino Statement
I have a natural talent for the Arts and I am a self-taught artist. I believe that I have been given this gift to bring wonderment and light into another human being’s life. My perspective on art is that my body is the tool that my mind’s eye uses so that I may create an emotion from within which has been born from an experience. At times, especially after sculpting, I have no recollection of the conception of the art piece, only that I lose connection with the physical world as I enter the creative one. A vision is then brought to life in a three-dimensional form, conceived with many types of mediums including marble, clay, wood, concrete and metal.
The Creation of “Goliath, The Warrior”
Gargoyles have always fascinated me. Protecting mortals through the dark of night is their destiny. A few years ago I was electrocuted, while I was alone one night. When I came to, my heart was pounding and I was overcome by an evil presence that was coming for me. Was I dead or alive? I did not know. As I struggled to my feet, I heard moans and screams of lost souls that flew around and through me. That night changed me forever. An unknown evil presence wanted me, and was angry that I did not succumb to death. It continued to pursue me and I could not go out at night. The pursuit continued for months. Creating “Goliath”, crouched, sword and mace in hand ready for battle, gave me strength and inspiration and protected me through this difficult time. One morning, I found strands of “Goliath’s” hair at my front door. Was there a battle? Had he won?
“Goliath, the Warrior”, is sculpted from 3/8”-1/2” Rebar, to form the framework; then, skinned with sheet metal from old cars. Goliath, kneeling on one knee, is 4’ tall, 7’ long, with a 6’ wingspan weighing in at 300 pounds.
