DOT BUNN Exhibit   see the exhibit click here

New Hope PA.– A life long resident of Bucks County, and two time winner of the prestigious Phillips’ Mill Patron Award for Painting, she concentrates on subjects drawn from her daily life and those that she identifies with and feels will resonate with viewers. The thirty new paintings in this show are all painted in a classical style using traditional methods of composition involving the geometry of rectangles much the same as was done by painters dating back to the Renaissance. Her unique painting style is a combination of Classical Realism and Contemporary Impressionism. Dot is a Classical Realists inspired and influenced by painters of the old Paris Salon; Sir John William Waterhouse; William McGregor Paxton; Cecilia Beaux and John Singer Sargent. She combines the traditional studio methods taught at the old Ecole des Beaux Arts with a thorough knowledge of natural light using a rich, chromatic palette of modern colors. She is Impressionistic in that her work is "painterly" and emphasizes naturalistic lighting. She depicts the world as it is without a great deal of idealization.

Dot works in her studio everyday for six to eight hours painting and reading books on the techniques and philosophy of art. For Dot, art is a science that requires practice and skill building just as in music and literature. Creativity with the foundation of solid construction and color usage is what great art is about. Kenyon Cox stated “Without design there may be representation but there is no art”. This is a motto that is written across her studio wall. Dot believes that a great artist is not purely self taught nor is art the result of mindless playing around. The very greatest artists studied for years to acquire their skill in drawing and composition.

Dot paints the Bucks County landscape and figurative work, but her focus is always on the process of making a work of art not on making a picture. “I enjoy the challenge of building a composition that works two dimensionally while depicting reality. For me it’s as much about the process as it is about the emotional message. First the subject has to excite me. The rest is like composing a symphony or writing a novel. The battle is won or lost by how well trained you are and how creatively you can engage those skills. I paint everyday and it is a real joy.” Dot continues,
“I feel fortunate that I have recently been able to study with Myron Barnstone, a gifted teacher at the Barnstone Studios in Copley, Pa. From him I began to realize how to achieve talent and how exhilarating it is to understand color and composition the way the great masters of art applied them. The process is never ending but the journey is so much more rewarding with this information. I continue to study with Mr. Barnstone to this day.”

The show continues thru November 30th.

March 8, 2008   "Still Here"

Still Life, Landscape, & Seascape paintings in pastel & oil.

Howard Gallery of Fine Art announces their new exhibit “Still Here”, will feature paintings by Thomas Linker, a Montgomery County resident and artist. Although a good portion of the paintings will be still life, Tom will also exhibit his landscape, seascapes, and landmark buildings.

Thomas Linker a widely recognized artist in the Northeast and a native of eastern Pennsylvania. Linker's deep love for the sea and rural scenery of the eastern seaboard are clearly reflected in his work. When not observing the great-outdoors for new material to paint, Linker is very comfortable painting a still life or creating a graphic in his studio. Linker's realism is tempered by a romantic sentiment, which produces a style of art that is particularly suited to scenes of sunsets, rustic houses, rolling landscapes and stunning beachscapes. click here to see some of Toms work

February 9, 2008   "Make it Personal"

Make your appointment now to bring in your pet for an original oil painting. 215.862.5272

Until recently, it was difficult to find a full service art gallery that offers a large body of "modern masters" to paint or sculpt an artwork to your specifications. Howard Gallery is now offering such a service with more than 10 artists that will "Make it Personal" for you. We will have you meet with the appropriate artist for your project at the gallery to discuss what it is you'd like created. No need to be concerned with commissioning an artist to create the image you would like to project for your surroundings. You'll be involved throughout the process.

On Saturday February 9, we are accepting appointments for Steve Messenger to photograph your house pet, for an oil painting to be done. Whether it's a feline, k-9, iguana, bird, or snake, Steve has the ability to satisfy your needs with a beautifully framed painting of your pet. He is also available to schedule a session for larger animals on location.

We have many artists that are ready to create a pastel, watercolor, or oil painting, of your garden, a house portrait, pets or animals, even an "exaggerated reality" caricature of yourself or family member (see James Bennett's page on our site).

Timothy Wadsworth Oils and Watercolors will be featured at Howard Gallery on Second Saturday, September 8, from 5 - 9pm

Tim Wadsworth has been drawing and painting since early adolescence and worked with a wide variety of mediums and in multiple forms. Early guidance and influence came from his grandmother and by the self study of many admired artists and works. While in school, most of his focus was on technical drawing. and drafting but there was always a magnetism to work with the freedom of sketching and watercolors.

Tim studied Fine Art at Slippery Rock University and completed his BS in Business Administration in 1981. Combining business interests with artistic ability found him opening the doors of Wadsworth Productions that offered commercial art services to the suburban Philadelphia area and beyond. Projects ranged from graphic design, murals, gold leaf, hand-carved signs, lettering, to commissioned paintings. The comfort zone always proved to be the return home to work in fine art.

Published by Primrose Press in 1991, Tim was able to gain broader exposure and recognition by distributing his fine art prints to regional galleries. This in turn, lead to displaying and selling original work in local galleries and opportunities to participate in art shows and events. His work is included many private and corporate collections.

Working primarily in watercolors, his subject matter gravitates to the Pennsylvania landscape and often focuses on historical architecture and rural settings. More recent works include oils, acrylics, and mixed media to accomplish a higher degree of realism.

The artists painting style has the influence of Andrew Wyeth’s, and gallery owner Howard Cooperman says that “they are often compared to the internationally known Chadd’s Ford, Pa. artist by many clients”. You can judge for yourself when you come in to see the exhibit.

Tim is an accomplished member of the Philadelphia Sketch Club.

The exhibition will take place in conjunction with the New Hope, Pa. & Lambertville NJ, Second Saturday Celebration of the Arts

Event. There will be live music in the streets, as well as many art galleries having receptions featuring their artists paintings,

sculpture, glass, and crafts. Many of the boutiques and restaurants remain open later than usual to allow visitors and tourists

stroll  the streets and take self guided gallery walks.

The Bed & Breakfast’s usually fill up quickly with reservations in anticipation of Second Saturdays. This is a perfect season to visit

our town, when the weather cools, to see the changing of the foliage and many things to do around

                         the Bucks County area.

August 4 - 30, 2007

Howard Gallery of Fine Art hosts an Open House exhibit featuring works by

25 gallery artists including pastels by Sandy Askey-Adams

Sandy Askey-Adams along with many other artists represented by Howard Gallery of Fine Art and Framing will exhibit her recent pastels from August 4 - 30. An Open House, frozen margarita reception will take place on August 11, from 5 - 9pm. It will coincide with Second Saturdays in New Hope.

Askey-Adams is one of two new artists being represented at New Hope’s largest gallery committed to featuring only Original Paintings by Contemporary Artists as well as bronze and wood sculpture. Jeremy M. Browne from Ontario Canada is the other most recent artist being represented. You will find oil paintings, pastel, and watercolor attractively framed and hanging throughout the two level, historic space built in 1798 with an addition constructed in 1935.

Native to Pennsylvania, Sandy Askey-Adams was born in a small rural town which fostered her love of nature. From an early age drawing and painting her interpretation of nature was a natural and essential form of self expression. The interpretation of nature and its moods continue to be the focus of her work today.

Embracing a poetically sensitive and gentle style, she strives to communicate a greater sense of love and peace to her viewers with each new work.

Primarily a self-taught artist, Sandy was an art major throughout high school. She received much encouragement from her mentors and teachers in her earlier years and has worked hard she says, by studying every art book possible, through trial and error and by way of blood, sweat and tears.

Although experienced in most mediums, favorites are pastels, oils and watercolours. Particularly passionate about pastels she loves the dramatic contrasts, the rich layers of colours and the vibrant visual luminescence that can be achieved with pastels.

She believes that the pastel medium will help achieve what she wishes to capture in the essence of nature.

Accomplishments are varied including the illustrations of the book titled "Nature Buffs Story", also illustrations for the ghost tours of Lambertville, NJ (illustrations were on permanent exhibit in the Lambertville House Hotel, Lambertville, NJ). As the exclusive, official artist for Hammersmith Farm in Newport, Rhode Island (which was owned by Jacqueline Kennedy's mother and was the Summer White House during the term of John F. Kennedy) numerous pieces were painted which included the landscape, flower gardens, and mansion of the property. Also this artist's palette of experience includes the honor of being the Featured Artist of The Deep Run Festival of the Arts (1999), also designing theatre sets, painting wall murals for Designer Homes and private homes, teaching art classes, organizing and managing art exhibits and painting murals for Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in Doylestown, PA.

Moreover, as an invited guest on a television network show, Sandy had the opportunity to exhibit her work and discuss her technique and style of painting. She also is the chairperson for the monthly Juried Art Exhibits held at the Northampton Cultural Center, Churchville, PA.

Sandy's paintings have won numerous awards in pastels, watercolours and oils and have been exhibited in juried, invitational and group shows throughout the Mid-Atlantic and New England area. She has also had the privilege of playing piano at some of those exhibits, including the Harrisburg Art Association Art Exhibits, Harrisburg, PA.

Likewise her paintings are included in private collections throughout the United States, Canada, Ireland and England. Corporate collections include Keebler Corporation, and The Johnson & Johnson Corporation. Many of Sandy's pastel paintings are in the permanent collection of Ronald McDonald House in Delaware.  In addition to working in Fine Arts, Sandy enjoys playing piano, composing music and writing.

Sandy was recently accepted to the American Academy of Women Artists.

"Their Artist Membership contains emerging figurative, western, plein air, still life, landscape, wildlife, and contemporary two and three - dimensional artists. We bring together women artists with similar goals, challenges, talent and professionalism".

Jeremy M. Browne from Brampton Ontario,

to exhibit at Howard Gallery of Fine Art

Jeremy Browne "Against the Woods" Watercolor

Jeremy Browne "Against the Woods"       watercolor

July  2007 - New Hope PA, Howard Gallery of Fine Art is pleased to announce the opening of their exhibit featuring watercolor paintings by Canadian Artist Jeremy M. Browne. The OPENING RECEPTION will be July 14, from 5 - 9pm

This new exhibit, Brampton or Bucks???, will leave you asking yourself whether the dry brush watercolors are local landscapes or from Jeremy M. Browne’s home town in Ontario.

Born in 1977, Jeremy grew up in the northern most part of Brampton Ontario, spending much of his childhood near the vast farming community of Central Ontario. Born to parents who had a genuine love

When he began showing an interest in art he naturally gravitated towards the things that he knew best, open land, farming communities and the rocky shore lines. After learning various techniques in watercolor Jeremy found that painting the rural areas provided the greatest challenge and satisfaction. Painting these areas allowed him to explore the effect of light on the land. One of the greatest challenges was portraying various lighting effects, the early morning sunrise or a mid-winter evening. Lighting and the effects of light on the buildings in these areas provide him the passion to paint. How will these buildings and landscapes differ under the various times of the day? Trying to capture this provides new challenges each time he paints.

Most of Jeremy’s paintings are done in either late fall or winter. By painting the landscape in its barest form, there is nothing to hide the natural beauty. With summer he finds that the light is obstructed, and not allowed to shine at its purist form. “I have found that painting a winter landscape allows me to focus all of my attention on the light and mood of my painting, and not focus of the foliage of a tree. This allows me to explore new ways to produce interesting lighting effects in my landscapes.”

Berc Ketchian ~ Armenian - American from Istanbul Turkey

Howard Gallery of Fine Art is pleased to announce the opening of their exhibit featuring oil paintings by Berc Ketchian. Armenian born in Istanbul Turkey, now resides in New Jersey.

“From His Mind's Eye” can only begin to describe the true to life scenes captured on canvas by Berc Ketchian.

"The artist conveys his emotions in a unique and eclectic manner. The magic lies in his brush strokes and his brilliant use of color and light. The spectator is drawn into the painting through romanticism, humanism, and naturalism, which capture the eye and heart.

His ability to create the illusion of detail so that the viewer thinks he understands the message or the mood merely serves to reinforce the artist's power to play with emotion. The beauty of the painting is that, whatever interpretation surfaces, the reaction is honest. This doesn't mean the work is facile, quite the contrary. It is accessible, yet complex; it is painfully realistic, yet ethereally poetic. Although glimpses of Van Gogh, Cezanne, Monet, Corot, and a myriad of other painters may emerge, the final result is totally and uniquely Berc." Come into the world of Berc's paintings, where two dimensions become three, or maybe four, as swirls of human emotion encompass everyday, yet completely extraordinary, scenes. Berc's compositions are strong and direct.

The result of endless studies and sketches, they are highly personal, revealing Berc's love of people and his deep understanding of them. The portraits offer a glimpse into their souls, and invite the viewer to create their biographies. Light moves over and across Berc's canvasses, creating intriguing plays of color on floors, walls, faces, tables, chairs. Seemingly broad strokes betray subtle shadings, just as the busy public worlds of bars and cafés provide a thin, shimmering veneer over images of sometimes profound human solitude. Berc's paintings are as specific as photographs, and yet as universal as a well-wrought poem.

Nothing in them can be foreign to anyone who has lived and felt deeply. Yet the moment you feel that you could step right into the painting and become a part of its simple drama, you find yourself pulled back to the position of observer. You find your eyes-like Berc's-looking in, sharing with him as he captures one infinitely precious freeze-frame of human life and feeling out of the millions that stream by too fast for us to ordinarily see or feel them.

Smell the ocean, feel the evening breeze on your skin, watch as sunlight or lamplight softens the walls surrounding Berc's characters. Inhabit the space of Berc's paintings . . . sense the warm bodies around you . . . allow time to stand still. And remember, there is always an empty chair waiting for you.

A must see show!

March 1 - 30, 2007

“From Bronze to Stone” sculpture exhibit will open

at Howard gallery of Fine Art featuring Bronze,

Wood, and Stone sculpture .

The reception is March 10th from 5 - 9 pm and is coinciding with Second       Saturdays in New Hope.

The gallery offers indoor and out sculpture by 13 local, regional, and international sculptors. The mediums being featured include Cast Bronze, Carved Pennsylvania Blue Stone with Fused Glass accents, and Wood. Abstract, figurative, and surreal sculpture is displayed throughout the seven room gallery and also outdoors in their garden.

The sculptors include works by, although are not limited to: Robert Birbeck, Beverly Davis, Joseph Derr, Barry Woods Johnston, Sandra Kaye & Martin, William Dean Kilpatrick, Impala Lechner, Bill Marshall, George McMonigle, Holly E. Smith, Dana Stewart, Richard Summons, and Joel Tea. Biographies are available at the gallery during your visit for most of the artists.

Robert Birbeck, born in West Palm Beach, Florida, attended the New England School of Art in Boston. He lived in Europe for a number of years before returning to America to reside in Woodstock, New York, then later in Provincetown Massachusetts, and now in Wells, Vermont.

Originally known for his oil paintings of nudes, Birbeck started sculpting in
Provincetown, translating his figurative oils into sensuous ceramic sculptures. He soon added wood and stone sculpture to his portfolio and now focuses on these media.

Birbeck has won numerous awards for his sculpture, including the prestigious Knickerbocker Artists Gold Medal of Honor for Exceptional Merit. His sculpture has been exhibited in major New York shows as well as several one-man shows throughout New England.A recent article in Provincetown Magazine states “It is impossible to approach Mr. Birbeck’s sculpture without immediately raising a hand to touch the smooth and luminous surfaces of stone and wood. The wood, polished to a high satiny sheen, literally glows. The patterns in the grain articulate the voluminous curves of the body. This marriage between material and form, particularly the use of pattern in the wood grain, is often breathtaking.”

Situated in the center of the Howard Gallery is Barry Wood Johnston’s sculpture “Ballerina.”  This half life-size bronze of a ballerina in a fully extended lunge is the personification of Johnston’s unmatched ability to capture energized form and anatomy in motion with robust, gravity-defying images.  The life-size image of this piece was awarded “Best in Show” at the 1990 National Arts Club Award.  Cooperman states, “Physicians, physical therapist, and gym instructors have remarked without exception that every muscle, tendon, and joint is captured in its truest form” in this remarkable piece.  Johnston’s exhibits and awards are too numerous to list.  He is indisputably one of today’s most gifted artists.

For those serious about whimsical art there can be no other artist than Richard Summons. His imagination is boundless.  He uses realistic, detailed, finely executed bronze sculptures to represent madcap scenes designed specifically to lighten the heart.  Summons states, "When I sit back, look at a new composition and laugh out loud, I know I've brought a bit of myself into existence.” His bronze 3-D sculpture “Another Level” illustrates a pair of free floating hands maneuvering the strings of a life-like tortoise marionette that is maneuvering the strings of a life-like frog marionette – a bizarre theme executed in perfection artistry.

These are but a few of the more than 60 indoor and outdoor inspiring works of art on display at Howard Gallery of Fine Art that took root in 1980 and has developed into one of the most “must see” galleries in New Hope PA.

Most of the artists are award winners of either national or international status. Mostly all of them will do commissions. Gallery owner Howard Cooperman has been told by many clients and shoppers that they have the largest selection of sculpture anywhere in the tri state area. Cooperman says that “many people claim that they’d have to go to as many as five galleries to see the large body of work that we have on hand”.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

December 2, 2006 Howard Gallery is pleased to announce the work of Santa Fe artist Jean Jack being featured. Reception 5 - 9 pm with a gourmet coffee sampling. Jeans work will be on exhibit thru December.

December is also our annual group artist exhibit that will run the entire month of December. Joy Barth, Dot Bunn, Cristine Cambrea, Becky Reilly, Charles and Lavetta Rhinehart, and Luiz Vilela, and others will be part of the festive months event.

Jean Jack lives, sells antiques and paints in Santa Fe. She was born in Massachusetts, and lived and worked in Greenwich, Connecticut, before coming to New Mexico in 1990. Jack studied with Marshall Glazier and Leo Manso at the Art Students League in New York City, and she has been painting images of buildings in landscapes for 38 years. Her paintings have won numerous awards from an impressive roster of judges, including Will Barnet. She received the prestigious Champion International Corporation Award at the Silvermine Guild Center for the Art (New Cannan, CT) in 1985. Forms in Solitude: New Mexico Churches and Houses (William R. Talbot Fine Art, 1997) was her first one-women show in New Mexico.

In her new series of paintings, Jean Jack again takes the relationship between landscape and buildings as the initial departure point for the formal investigations of her paintings. The buildings fit themselves into the landscape, and the sky fills in the spaces between the two. In the traditional regionalist parlance, the way this triangle of specifics interrelates is called a 'sense of place'.

There is a poignant sense of unease and even loneliness in the places Jack paints, however, which is underscored by her dramatic contrasts of complementary colors, and her equally dramatic transitions between reality and unreality. Despite Jack's use of very real houses and churches as models, these are realistic paintings only in a sense. 'Idealistic' is perhaps a better word for the convincing power of the very simplified forms and colors. These bright, sensitive paintings are more of an exquisite arrangement of elements that express an essential feeling about New Mexico, Colorado and Kansas, rather than a view out of a window.

It could be asked why these images of houses are so appealing. They are, after all, even lonelier than Edward Hopper's paintings, and even more abstract than the homespun universal truths of folk art. In the most literal way, houses are an immediate necessity in our lives. They provide us with shelter and warmth, social status and a physical place in our community. Our homes are also a metaphor for who we are, who we wish we were, and where we want to be. According to the language of dreams, houses are even symbols of ourselves: complex interrelationships of interior and exterior realities, unconscious and conscious lives. Jean Jack has a talent for presenting these many layers of meanings in a few deft strokes of color, or a few carefully chosen shapes.

Perhaps most importantly, Jack conveys the quite dignity of these architectural shapes as she rearranges them, tries them out from different perspectives, composes them in varying color relationships, and emphasizes the specific beauty of different forms. One senses that she becomes close to her subjects in the way that other artist grow attached to their human models. She paints variations of specific houses from different perspectives and at different times of the year. She loves these buildings for their imperfections and idiosyncrasies; and it is both impossible and unimportant to know exactly when or where these places exist, because they are creations of the artist.
