Christine Graefe Drewyer Bio
Having been told by many a great sage that we all know our gifts, it follows that the pursuit of our life path is derived from the joys we find at an early age.
I began to assess those probable qualities in my own journey. Surely the earliest memories of childhood are surrounded with this obsessive need I possess to create. I can tell you that I fell absolutely head over heels in love with the crayola crayon “Midnight Blue”. I can still conjure up the joyful smells of that open box and its wild array of rainbow hues! Everything, and I do mean everything, was rendered in this treasured color. That’s about the earliest memory … now the smells of turpentine, oil paint, old rags and even the toxic smelling Liquin are all parts of the sense perception that I associate with my greatest joy … much to the chagrin of my family.
This need to create came honestly to me. My Mother was a custom floral designer, morphing into an interior decorator. That, of course, was in her moments of self expression while raising six daughters. She had this unbelievable ability to mix colors and fabrics and see the balance of a space … quite an education for drafting compositions later in my own experience of making paintings. I believe they call that Zen now.
My Dad was a master electrician and I know that gift is in there somewhere for me. I just haven’t seen it yet. Dad’s ability to do perfect architectural drawings and problem solve are qualities that I value greatly in my own experience as an artist today. I have more problem solving practice than any individual should have the opportunity to experience in one lifetime. As they say … any artist can definitely tell you why we cut off our ears!
Through the strong example of multitasking that my Mother set, I began early to pursue this need for self expression. Anything that would satisfy this need of mine to create was nurtured and encouraged. I could construct a dress, complete with sleeves at the age of 12, eventually having a kids clothing business. I finally realized that it wasn’t the making of the clothes that I enjoyed, but the designing of something new! Bingo … now there was a light bulb moment. It was then that I decided to go back to school (Maryland College of Art & Design) for my first real love … the study of art. The paintings of my family that I produced were not going in the Louvre, but oh, how I still loved this. I was obsessed with the old masters and became a certified copyist for the National Museum in Washington DC and studied the Impressionists with a hunger and a passion to rival anything I’d ever experienced.
After a dozen reproductions, I knew it was time to brings these artists into my studio and continue my journey in a more metaphysical way. They still peak through occasionally. George Inness and I share the same birthday and I fervently invite him to influence the light in a landscape anytime!
I am an environmental activist dedicated to the preservation of our planet. That cause is the driving force and focus in my artistic voice. Finally there is a mission to my madness, as they say. I go at it with great conviction to protect and defend this life sustaining gift that we all share. Having grown up in the woods, surrounded with all manner of creatures, I fully embrace the land. To emulate the beauty of my experience is why I paint. What a fabulous ride this is.
I have had the joy of being in this field for over 20 years, having over a dozen solo shows and countless group shows. I was selected by the editors of American Art Collector Magazine as a featured artist in October 2007, named Woman of the Year in my field by National Association of Professional and Executive Women in 2008. I’m a member of Women in the Arts, an Associate member of Oil Painters of America and actively support and contribute to The Nature Conservancy and Heifer International.
I feel the great satisfaction of doing that which honors my gifts and brings me joy. It is more than satisfying to know that another individual will collect my creations and I, of course, know the secret … these paintings can only be made when you are 100% present and connected to whatever it is that you call source. That energy then goes full circle and brings the owner all of its wonderful concentrated joy and it is passed on … and so it continues.
I was very moved the first time that I heard, “If not you, then who … if not now, then when ?” How motivating! The very honorable process of making art, for arts sake is a sacred expression that I am striving for … like the Nike ad, you’ve gotta just Do it. Hopefully at the end of the day, I will say, yes, it was about the journey and I did do it.
