John McDevitt began his artistic journey with folk art wood carving.  A package designer holding multiple patents, McDevitt worked for over twenty years as a specialist in package design and development of new products including Johnson’s® Baby Products and Kraft Cheese.

Contemporary world events, his aikido practice, and stories of human struggle serve to inform McDevitt in his quest to create dynamic and organic works that reflect his spiritual path.

McDevitt holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology and a Master’s degree in Engineering Management from Northwestern University.  He recently left Johnson & Johnson to pursue a full-time career in sculpture.

I express myself most naturally through sculpture.  As I work, I am not forced to think about what words to use or what you might think about me.  I allow myself to communicate with form, material, color…texture.  Simplicity, tension, death, life.  Sculpture provides me the opening I need to further connect.

My work is grounded in life.  Evolution of man (or not), each moment’s potential for life or death, our individual energy.  My desire to learn and grow as an individual, connect with people, my community and the world.  Can I make myself lighter? These are things I push myself to face into every day and express through my work.  It is grounded in what I am developing in myself or believe strongly about.  It is, as I am, a work in progress

The forms invite you in and challenge you to see something more, to think.  Are you living or dying, are you evolving and helping the world to evolve, are you connecting somehow to what is around you?

I encourage you to touch, spin, and pick up my work.  The smoothness of the stone, the fit of the queen’s back against your thumb, the energy of Ki-netic.  I want to engage your senses, your mind…and for a moment connect with you.

My early work was about engaging with the observer and making them smile.  I wanted to make people happy. “Oh, how cute” type of happy.  It did not ask much of them or me.  What it did do is help me think in 3 dimensions and learn to execute my ideas.  It also gave me “permission” to create art.  Woodcarving is a great place to cut your teeth.  It forces you to work with it but is forgiving enough to let you grow.  It was my path to stone, steel, bronze. For this I am forever grateful to Santa.
