Barbara Lewis has lived and worked as a professional artist in Bucks County for over twenty years. She has studied with many well-known artists including Nelson Shanks, Daniel Greene and Frank Arcuri. Most recently, she trained at “Studio Incamminati,” a new atelier in Philadelphia established and run by Mr. Shanks and dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in classical portraiture. Ms. Lewis also studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and completed the “Studio for Advanced Studies” in 1999.

Barbara believes in classical training. “It takes years of drawing and painting from life to develop needed skills. One has to learn to see nuances in values and color, and to handle proportion, perspective and composition before one can successfully translate a 3-dimensional image to a 2-dimensional surface. Only then can one expand creatively.” She draws inspiration from old masters like John Singer Sargent, Thomas Eakins, Frans Hals and Caravaggio. The emphasis on light emerging from shadow, or “chiaroscuro,” is an important part of her work and is especially evident in her still lifes and portraits. In many ways, she finds her artistic endeavors to be like a spiritual journey. “Trying to create a work of art that captures the beauty and strength of life around us involves the whole mind and spirit.  It demands commitment and humility.”

Ms. Lewis paints in a representational style. Her still life and landscape oil paintings have been exhibited in solo shows at Travis Gallery in New Hope, Toro Gallery in Huntingdon Valley and at her home. Her work has appeared in numerous group shows at the Salmagundi Club in New York, the Pennsylvania State Museum in Harrisburg, the Woodmere Museum and other regional galleries. She was selected in 2000 to be a member of the Center of Emerging Visual Artists, formerly the Creative Artists Network of Philadelphia.

She devotes much of her time to portrait painting, as well. “There is nothing more challenging and exciting than painting a human face or body. I believe there is a light that shines in everyone and I try to capture that light so that others can feel it.” Ms. Lewis paints portraits from life or from photos and finds that getting to know the subject is an important and enjoyable part of her work. She is a member of the Portrait Society of America, a Fellow of the American Artists Professional
League, and Oil Painters of America.
